Suminagashi is the Japanese art of still floating. Indian ink deposited on the surface of the water is the beginning of each adventure. Natural or induced movements on the water act as seamless animators! Legend has it that this game originated in the court games of the late Heian period (12th century). It is said to have been handed down to Jiyaemon Hiroba by the Shinto deity Kazuga Miyojin at the Nara temple in recognition of his devotion. Long a confidential art form, it is now accessible to all, with a contemplative, joyful and creative approach.
